"With one foot in the future and one foot in the past, it's all about great music and songs..." states Eric Buffalohead (Ponca), lead guitarist and co-founder of this Minneapolis, MN based Native American Blues-Rock band Bluedog. Along with lead singer and lyricist Joni Buffalohead (Dakota), Bluedog is poised and ready to take America by storm with the release of their debut recording "From All Directions".

Although Bluedog is a Native American band, their unique blend of contemporary blues, rock, R&B and folk gives them an instantly identifiable sound, which appeals to audiences of all genders, ages and creeds. The recognizable influences of legendary acts such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Jimi Hendrix are apparent in the songwriting and musicianship of Bluedog, but with the inclusion of the Janis Joplin and Susan Tedschi inspired vocal talents of lead singer Joni Buffalohead, the Bluedog "sound" is wonderfully innovative, and includes a strong leaning towards their Native American mentors, Indigenous and Redbone.

Once in a while a musical force will burst upon the scene and forever change the sonic landscape, Bluedog is that force. Great music and songs are fundamental to a bands success....." Bluedog is a band for the future.

The Band

Joni Buffalohead-Lead Vocal:

[Bdewakantowan/Dakota] Co-founder and singer-songwriter, Joni got her start in music as a conga and bongos player. She quickly developed an interest in vocals and took off from there. The Bluedog band was founded to give Joni the opportunity to be lead vocalist in a blues rock band.

Eric Buffalohead-Guitar:

[Ponca] Co-founder and lead guitarist, Eric has been playing in bands for over twenty years. In that time he has covered various categories of music including; classic rock, oldies, blues, country and reggae. His real love is in the genre of blues and the Bluedog band has been his chance to play the music that is in his heart.

Chuck Davis-Conga/Bongos and Timbales:

[Lakota] Congas and Bongos, Chuck joined Bluedog after a long stint of touring nationally with Brule. Chuck has had a long career in music that has taken him around the United States. His playing abilities add new dimensions to the Bluedog sound.

Alexandra Buffalohead-Keyboard/Vocal:

[Bdewakantowan/Dakota] Alex is the youngest member of the Bluedog lineup. The daughter of lead vocalist Joni and lead guitarist Eric, Alex has the ability to emulate her mothers voice exactly. She has provided well rounded backing vocals and has recently put years of piano lesson to use by playing keyboard.

Tom Suess-Bass:

Tom's solid bass playing and backing vocals are a key element to the bluedog sound. Tom brings years of experience playing in multiple genres of music.

Jimmy Corbett-Blues Harp:

[Lakota] Jimmy’s blues harp adds an essential blues element to the Bluedog sound.  Jimmy “sat in” with the band at Mole Lake in August of 2005 and has played with us several times since then.

Reviews

" Bluedog is one self assured blues band with a brassy lead singer with a voice that will knock you out! Great guitar work, songwriting and production makes this a band that is going to make some BIG noise! A fantastic debut recording."
Brian Hendrickson, Native American Music Director, WFHB Community Radio-Bloomington, Indiana

"…a wonderful musical experience… the up and coming blues-rock band BlueDog, is a powerhouse group features great musicianship and the searing vocal talents of Joni Buffalohead, a cross between Etta James and Janis Joplin……" The Albuquerque Alibi.

"…who would have guessed that from the frozen tundra of Minnesota a flame spitting blues band could emerge…..shadows of Hendrix and SRV abound…."
Dale Katz, The Carbondale Gazette.

"The new release, "From All Directions" by Oyate Music artists BlueDog, is a top notch recording in the blues-rock genre. This very talented group from Minnesota show it's musical and songwriting chops on this excellent nine song debut. Masterfully recorded by acclaimed award winning producer Tony Palmer (Breeds, RavenHeart, Robbie Robertson, Native Thunder) every song on this recording is emotional and heartfelt in its delivery. From the opening chords of "Little Ol' Feelin" to the final etude on the final track, there is never a dull moment and the vocal stylings of lead singer Joni Buffalohead are a joy to listen to throughout this wonderful release. Another hit from Oyate Music! 5 STARS!” Sally Jurgenson- News From Indian Country.

"A noteworthy CD released in 2005 that escaped our attention at the time is From All Directions by BlueDog (Oyate Music), a five-piece rockin’ blues band from the Twin Cities area. The nine high-energy tracks were co-written by Eric Buffalohead (Ponca) and vocalist Joni Weston-Buffalohead (Mdewakantonwan/Sisseton)."  Native Peoples Magazine.
